The Boren Awards fund US students to study less-commonly-taught languages and pursue research in world regions critical to US interests, in exchange for a commitment to federal government service. 2027-28 funding may be applied to programs starting as early as June 2027 or as late as March 1, 2028.
Who can apply
- US citizen
- Scholarship: matriculated undergraduate at a US institution, remaining enrolled through the award
- Fellowship: enrolled in or applying to a US graduate program
- Proposed program includes significant language study (preference for 25+ weeks)
- Willing to meet the federal service requirement
