The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) at the University of Houston (UH) is a 10-week program designed to provide rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors with a focused, full-time research experience under the mentorship of UH faculty. Participants receive a $4,000 scholarship and earn three points toward the Honors in Co-Curricular Engagement transcript designation.
SURF offers students the opportunity to engage in independent research projects across various disciplines. Throughout the summer, participants attend weekly Brown Bag Lecture series and are required to present their research findings at the Undergraduate Research Day. The program emphasizes hands-on research experience, professional development, and academic growth.
Who can apply
- Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors from all majors with at least a 3.0 GPA.
- Students with fewer than 12 credit hours from UH require a 3.5 GPA.
- Applicants must be full-time UH main campus students.
- Post-baccalaureate students and those enrolled in graduate or professional programs are not eligible.
- Students graduating in the spring or summer of the application year are ineligible.
- Previous SURF participants cannot reapply.
- Students may apply to both SURF and the Houston Early Research Experience (HERE) in the same year.
