The Equitable Pathways to Community Disaster Resilience REU at KU provides undergraduate students with an interdisciplinary approach to understanding and addressing community resilience in the face of natural and human-made disasters. The program explores the challenges and opportunities in building disaster-resilient communities, with a special focus on equity, social justice, and vulnerable populations who are often disproportionately affected by disasters.
Students are paired with KU faculty mentors and engage in research projects that may include topics such as disaster preparedness, recovery planning, risk assessment, environmental justice, infrastructure resilience, and climate change adaptation. Research is conducted through both qualitative and quantitative methods, and students work on real-world projects with the goal of developing solutions that promote community resilience and equitable recovery.
In addition to research, students participate in professional development workshops, seminars, and networking opportunities that help build skills in scientific communication, research ethics, and career preparation. The program includes site visits to disaster-impacted areas and opportunities for community engagement to provide students with firsthand experience in disaster resilience efforts.
Who can apply
- Undergraduate Status: Applicants must be currently enrolled as undergraduate students, typically rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors.
- Interest in Disaster Resilience and Social Justice: Applicants should have a strong interest in disaster resilience, community planning, or social justice, with a desire to contribute to equitable recovery efforts.
- Academic Achievement: A competitive GPA is required, particularly in relevant coursework such as environmental science, geography, sociology, or urban planning.
- Application Materials: Applicants are generally required to submit a resume or CV, a personal statement outlining their research interests and career goals, unofficial transcripts, and letters of recommendation from faculty members or advisors.
