The MIT Haystack Observatory REU program offers paid summer research internships for undergraduate students in science, engineering, and computer science. This NSF-sponsored 10-week program runs from June 1 to August 7, 2026, providing hands-on research experience on cutting-edge projects such as Event Horizon Telescope development, EDGES data analysis, radio astronomy with the 37m telescope, ionospheric studies, and more. Students work closely with staff mentors, participate in science discussions, facility tours, group meetings, and present their findings in final seminars. The program has a long history of launching students into successful STEM careers.
Participants receive a weekly stipend of $620 (paid biweekly with advance), on-site dormitory housing with kitchen facilities, daily transportation, and limited travel support for those over 100 miles away. Health insurance is required (proof provided by student). The program emphasizes in-person participation with orientation activities, and flexible start dates may be considered case-by-case for quarter-system students.
Who can apply
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident (NSF requirement)
- Enrolled undergraduate student (baccalaureate or associate degree program); must not have graduated prior to June 2026 start
- Includes recent high school graduates accepted to undergrad programs or summer transfers not enrolled
