Georgia Tech SURE Research Program

The Summer Undergraduate Research in Engineering/Sciences (S.U.R.E.) program at the Georgia Institute of Technology is a 10-week summer research experience designed to attract rising juniors and seniors interested in graduate school in engineering, science, computing, and related STEM fields. Founded in 1992 by Dr. Gary May, SURE pairs approximately 20 students from U.S. institutions with Georgia Tech faculty and graduate student mentors for hands-on research projects in disciplines including Aerospace Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Civil & Environmental Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Industrial & Systems Engineering, Materials Science Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Participants engage in research, professional development, industry tours, social events, and graduate school preparation including GRE and NSF GRFP workshops.

The program provides a $6,000 stipend to cover meals, transportation, parking, and other expenses, along with on-campus housing. With a strong track record, 76% of over 500 alumni have pursued graduate studies, half at Georgia Tech. Recent cohorts show high GPAs (avg 3.7), diversity (33% women, 20% first-gen), and survey gains in research skills, grad school planning (89%), and confidence. Supported by NSF, Intel, and others, SURE especially encourages first-generation and socioeconomically disadvantaged applicants.

Students apply via Georgia Tech's InfoReady portal, ranking top faculty choices from past projects or COE academics. Deliverables include oral/poster presentations and a personal statement draft. All must be U.S. citizens/permanent residents.
