The Broad Summer Research Program (BSRP), also referred to as the Scientific program, is an intensive nine-week undergraduate research opportunity at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Designed for students committed to biomedical research and interested in genomics, participants conduct original computational or experimental research in labs spanning areas like cancer, infectious diseases, and computational biology, mentored by leading scientists.
The program features a comprehensive curriculum beyond lab work, including scientific communication training, seminars with Harvard/MIT faculty, graduate school preparation workshops, professional development, and discussions on diversity in science. Team-building activities and social events in Boston foster collaboration. Students present their findings through oral and poster sessions and receive support to attend national conferences.
Generous support includes a $5,400 stipend, free housing in partner facilities, round-trip travel to Boston, and select meals. Full-time commitment is required with no other courses or jobs allowed. Program held in Cambridge labs during summer months.
Who can apply
- Strong interest in pursuing a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. graduate program.
- Must be enrolled in a four-year U.S. college/university during Fall 2025
- Graduation no earlier than December 2026 (non-graduating; May/June 2026 grads ineligible)
- Majoring in physical sciences, biological sciences, computer science, engineering, or mathematics
- Minimum GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale
- U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, or non-U.S. citizen with employment authorization (e.g., DACA)
- No previous research experience required; students with limited STEM opportunities especially encouraged.
