The Fulbright Foreign Student Program enables graduate students, young professionals, and artists from abroad to study and conduct research in the United States. Operating in more than 160 countries worldwide, the program awards approximately 4,000 scholarships annually. Grants typically cover tuition, living stipend, airfare, health insurance, and professional development for master's, PhD, or research projects lasting one to two academic years.
Administered by binational Fulbright Commissions, U.S. Embassies, IIE, and AMIDEAST on behalf of the U.S. Department of State, the program promotes mutual understanding through academic exchange. Grantees receive J-1 visa support and participate in enrichment activities. Placement may be handled by IIE or self-placement, with a requirement to return home upon completion to apply knowledge gained.
Fields include humanities, social sciences, STEM (non-clinical), arts, with country-specific priorities.
Who can apply
- Reside in the country of nomination at time of application
- Possess equivalent of U.S. bachelor’s degree with good academic record by program start
- Fluent in English: TOEFL iBT 79-80 min, IELTS 6.5 overall, or equivalent
- Not hold U.S. citizenship or permanent residency; dual citizens ineligible
- Meet country-specific requirements (check local Fulbright office)
- Preference for little/no prior U.S. study/living experience
- Commitment to return to home country after grant
- For some countries, professional experience required
