The University of Otago Summer Research Scholarships, particularly those funded by the Otago Medical Research Foundation (OMRF), provide undergraduate students with hands-on research experience in fields related to human health, including biomedical sciences and public health. These competitive scholarships support approximately 20 projects annually, each supervised by senior researchers and lasting 10 weeks over the summer period from November to February. Students work on real research projects, often leading to careers in research or teaching, and contributing valuable knowledge to their fields. The program is assessed by OMRF's Scientific Committee, selecting only the highest-quality applications. Stipends are benchmarked at NZ$7,000 for full 10-week projects, paid in installments.
Who can apply
- Students returning to study at a New Zealand university in the following year
- Not receiving alternative scholarship support for the same or overlapping timeframe (one scholarship only)
- Not enrolled in the research component of a master's degree or PhD
- Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship students receiving living stipends over the same period are ineligible
- Full supervision by a research-active University of Otago academic staff member (or approved equivalent)
- For OMRF: Primarily Health Sciences/Sciences students at Otago Dunedin, committed to 10-week full-time project in human health, biomedical, or public health research.
