The LPI Summer Intern Program in Planetary Science (marking its 50th year in 2026) is a 10-week internship offering undergraduate students hands-on research alongside leading planetary scientists. Interns work one-on-one with a scientist from the Lunar and Planetary Institute or NASA Johnson Space Center on a research project in lunar, planetary, and solar system science, and participate in enrichment activities including lectures and career-development workshops. The program is funded through NASA's Support for Planetary Sample Science.
Who can apply
- Completed at least 50 semester hours of undergraduate credit.
- Majors in physical or natural sciences, engineering, computer science, or mathematics preferred; all eligible students considered.
- Not a citizen of a country on the U.S. State Department's Designated Countries list.
- Selection based on scholarship/curriculum/experience, career objectives and scientific interest, and fit with available research projects.
