The Los Alamos National Laboratory Undergraduate Student Program, also known as the Undergraduate Student Internship Program (UGS), offers paid year-round and summer internships providing domestic and international undergraduate students with valuable hands-on research and work experience in technical and professional fields aligned with their studies. Open to entering first-year students, current undergraduates, and post-bachelor’s interns, the program complements academic education through mentoring, professional development, and formalized work plans. Participants engage in cutting-edge projects contributing to national security, energy, environment, and global challenges, such as advanced engineering design, computational modeling, machine learning applications, and experimental research at one of the world's leading multidisciplinary research institutions.
Who can apply
- Currently enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program (or international equivalent) in a relevant field such as engineering, physical sciences, or professional disciplines.
- Enrolled in at least 12 semester credit hours (or full-time equivalent); entering freshmen must provide matriculation documentation.
- Cumulative GPA of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent).
- Open to domestic and international students, though certain nationalities (non-LPR citizens of China, Iran, North Korea, Russia) are prohibited due to federal restrictions.
- Must meet US citizenship suitability requirements (NNSA Directive 206.2) or foreign national screening (DOE Order 142.3A).
- Desired: Programming skills, lab/shop experience, CAD/FEA, strong communication, commitment to safety and results.
