The Cancer Research Education, Advancement, Training, and Empowerment (CREATE) Program at the University of Hawaiʻi Cancer Center offers undergraduate sophomores and juniors from Hawaiʻi and the Pacific Islands a hands-on summer research experience. The program aims to reinforce students' commitment to obtaining a science degree and to encourage careers that address health disparities and contribute to drug discovery. This eight-week program pairs students with faculty mentors in either the Population Sciences in the Pacific or Cancer Biology research programs. Participants engage in mentored research projects and participate in activities such as orientation sessions, research ethics training, writing seminars, journal clubs, and a final poster presentation.
Who can apply
- Academic Standing: Currently enrolled sophomores or juniors in an accredited college or university.
- Residency: Residents of Hawaiʻi or Guam.
- Academic Achievement: Minimum GPA of 3.5.
- Commitment: Ability to commit to a full-time summer research experience (8 weeks at 40 hours per week).
- Additional Considerations: Priority is given to applicants with research interests matching available mentors, relevant research experience, completion of relevant coursework, first-generation college students, or those from low socioeconomic backgrounds.
